Commercial Scaffolding at Newcastle East Public School
One of our recent projects was completed in Newcastle on the central coast of NSW. We do not usually complete jobs that are 3 hours travel from our base in Matraville but we were recommended to the client and they were happy to cover any extra costs associated with this distance (accommodation, living away allowances, paid travel time, hire car, etc).
8 Months Project Planning
The project planning for the scaffold started around 8 months prior to install as there was a very tight program that needed to be met due to the school being still occupied. In order to have the scaffold installed ready for the start of the school holidays we needed to send a proposal to the school that would limit the amount of disruption to teachers and students.
Restoration of Roof & Chimneys
Most of the works was for the restoration of the roof and chimneys. We provided a full perimeter access scaffold with fall protection to also follow the 8 gables.
The school is listed as heritage so anchoring into the brickwork was not an option. We overcame this with the use of buttress bays and wing braces. We needed to complete the scaffold in 15 working days and finished 4 days early with which the client was extremely pleased.
Accommodating Scaffolders
We accommodated the scaffolders within a 5 minute drive of the project to manage fatigue, they were working 10-12-hour shifts, Monday to Saturday, and so had to have accommodation nearer to the site. Making sure our scaffolders were bright eyed and bushy tailed throughout the project allowed us to complete it ahead of schedule.
Need Extra Scaffolding In A Hurry? No Problem!
There was a request for some extra scaffold to be installed inside the classrooms for painting ceilings. Usually we would supply aluminium mobile towers as the most cost effective solution for this type of work but due to a combination of roof trusses, low hanging lights and a short time frame to complete the works we suggested 2 x fairly large birdcage type scaffolds (approx 15m long x 8m wide x 8m high). Due to weight restrictions on the floorboards we had to use the lightweight aluminium Kwik stage system. The request was at very short notice but we were still able to turn this around and start the install within 24 hours.
Experienced Scaffolding Providers for Heritage Listed Schools
Stronghold Hire have completed 3 very similar jobs to this that are on heritage listed schools that required roof and chimney restoration in the last 3 months, having recently worked in Domremy College, Five Dock and Shore School. If you an experienced scaffolding provider for heritage listed schools then get in touch!
