As discussed on previous posts, Stronghold Hire is one of Sydney’s leading suppliers of aluminium scaffolds. We have recently talked about the differences and advantages of aluminium scaffold over steel scaffold, and discussed how versatile aluminium scaffold is. It is commonly believed that the aluminium scaffold system has very low limitations, however, you may be surprised to know that our system is rated to be installed up to 20m in height.
To give you an indication of its versatility, we would like to highlight some of the more notable projects that we have used aluminium scaffold over the years.
Maroubra Junction Hotel, Maroubra
The Maroubra Junction Hotel project could only be completed with aluminium scaffold due to the location of the works. The Hotel was undergoing some major renovations which included the restoration of the clock and dome in the centre of the roof. The owner of the hotel wanted to avoid any sort of council permits, crane lifts, traffic or pedestrian control, etc.
The first challenge was getting the material to the upper balcony. The only way to do this was to walk all of the material through the hotel and up 4 flights of stairs, the lightweight aluminium scaffold system was perfect for this type of material handling. The scaffold also needed to be lightweight as it was spread over the slate roof.
Angel Place, Sydney CBD
Stronghold Hire has completed hundreds, if not thousands of internal scaffolds in office blocks, hotels, lift shafts, churches, etc. One of the projects that required the use of aluminium light weight scaffold was that of Angel Place in Sydney’s CBD.
The client needed to reach windows that were 11m high at the top of the building, in a void space over 3 floors. There were a few challenges with this being night shift work and no goods lift, however, the biggest challenge was that the scaffold needed to be mobile. The alternative was to provide a large ‘birdcage’ type scaffold which would have increased costs significantly.
Most mobile scaffolds fall into the 2m to 6m range, but this scaffold needed to reach a working height of 11m. To do this, we needed to make the base of the scaffold much wider, for stability. We also needed to use heavy duty castors. At a deck height of 9m, one would imagine that the scaffold would be difficult to move around, however, as the load is spread over 6 castors and the system is extremely light, the scaffolds could be moved easily, and safely with just 2 people.
Croydon Presbyterian Ladies’ College, Croydon
One of the many schools and colleges that Stronghold Hire has completed scaffolds at includes the prestigious Croydon Presbyterian Ladies College. We have completed several scaffold projects over the years at this location.
One of the projects that required our lightweight aluminium scaffold system was that of the roofing and window restoration of the tallest building on site. The part of the structure that the works were to be carried out was inset into the roof space. This meant that only one of the elevations could be reached from erecting from the floor upwards, with the remaining 3 elevations needing to be based out using the roof.
Our engineer produced a design that involved taking most of the weight through the ridges of the roof, the strongest parts, using ladder beams. Another integral part of this design was to utilize our lightweight aluminium scaffold around the 4 elevations, which would be linked to a steel stretcher and buttress bay scaffold. As two systems were used, these scaffolds needed to be independently inspected and certified on handover and every 30 days. There are many more projects where our aluminium modular scaffolds have been used over the years, with the nature of these projects giving aluminium the advantage over steel.
