Shrink Wrap Temporary Shelter - Goulburn Train Station

Last month Stronghold Hire were asked by a new client to work in with their current scaffold supplier to provide a temporary shelter for roof works. The project was located outside Sydney in the town of Goulburn. Most of our work is carried out in the greater Sydney area but we have been known to travel further afield with our shrink wrap service, with the furthest being at Rottnest Island in Western Australia!

Goulburn Train Station Restoration

This new client was responsible for the restoration of the Goulburn Train Station. The iconic train station was opened back in 1869 and since then has been heritage listed. We have a lot of experience in dealing with heritage-listed buildings and know exactly what is expected of their architects.

Roof Restoration Project Challenges

Part of this restoration was to renew the roof. The two main challenges were:

  1. All parts of the train station were to remain open to the public, with commuters using their services each day.
  2. The buildings that required restoration were occupied and could not be cleared out.

The client was able to work in with Sydney trains and their staff to agree on a program that would cause the least amount of disruption to the commuters and staff. The main worry was the re-roof. The roof restoration required the existing roof to be completely removed and the building kept watertight. This is where Stronghold Hire was able to help.

Working With Other Scaffolders

The client had already engaged a scaffolder who was inducted and cleared for other works on the job. With the distance from Sydney to transport material and the fact that this scaffolding company was reputable and already familiar with the site, it made sense for them to supply the scaffold and temporary roof structure. We were introduced to working together, this is not something that is alien to us, in fact, it is quite common with our shrink wrap service.

Engineered and Built to Code

The first stage was to bring in our engineer to provide drawings indicating wind loads for Sydney Trains to approve. Once approved the scaffold supplier erected the first scaffold and roof frame as per the drawings (there were 4 in total with more to be done in the future).

On completion of each scaffold, the engineer came to the site to make sure that everything was built to code, with ties tested and then certified, ready for the wrap. Our product and tools were transported from Sydney with the shrink wrap encapsulation crew who stayed in town for a few nights until the job was complete. Our crew have no problem working away and will often try to mix a little business with pleasure by meeting their families and staying a few extra days to explore and relax.

Flooded with Shrink Wrap Enquiries

With the weather being so bad this year, we have had a lot more enquiries than usual about our shrink wrap service. A lot of the time they are too far along with the project for us to help, the best way is to prepare early and get our advice from the start to see if shrink wrap is worth the extra cost.
